Two weeks off from competition didn’t seem to hamper the Marshfield boys basketball team one bit.
Tigers coach Bill Zuiker wondered if his team would show rust Friday after not playing a game since Jan. 3, or if his players were ready to resume Wisconsin Valley Conference play.
Marshfield showed it was ready for action as it dismantled Wisconsin Rapids 64-37 at the Boson Community Fieldhouse.
“I was a little worried,” Zuiker said. “You never know what you’re going to get when you have a long break like we had. “It was one of those night’s that we played very well for whatever reason. I think the guys were hungry because it’s been so long between games.”
Senior Matt Oestreich scored 12 points in the first quarter and all of his 18 points before halftime. After that, Luke Zuiker and Alex Strege handled most of the scoring.
“Matt did a great job and he’s a great player,” Luke Zuiker said of his teammate’s performance. “We have a lot of guys who can do things out there and he played great tonight.”
While Marshfield had several players scoring and making plays on defense, Wisconsin Rapids struggled with Alex Bassuener on the bench for the majority of the second quarter after picking up three fouls in the first.
“It hurt us when Alex wasn’t on the floor,” Rapids coach Dan Witter said. “Our continuity wasn’t there when he wasn’t out there. The kids were kind of looking for something when he wasn’t out there and we didn’t find it.
“We have to play harder and that’s on me as their coach to find way for them to be more intense,” Witter added. “But Marshfield is a very good and athletic team, and (today) we’re going to play at team that’s even better.”
Rapids will play La Crosse Central, ranked ninth in Division 2 in the latest Associated Press poll, at the La Crosse Center.
