Boys basketball roundup: Big 3rd quarter lifts Cougars over Haslett

By

HASLETT

After 10 years as an assistant coach for Lansing Catholic, Haslett coach Chris Smith faced the Cougars and the man he used to work under on Tuesday.

Thanks to a big third quarter, Darren Zwick was able notch a victory over his longtime pupil.

The Cougars went 11 for 14 from the field as part of a 27-8 third-quarter scoring dash and Lansing Catholic (11-6) beat the Vikings 73-48 in nonleague play.

“Sitting down there is one of my best friends, so that’s always a little bit awkward,” Zwick said. “But we both would agree that once the ball went up, we’re coaching our teams and want our teams to play their best and it was a competitive basketball game.”

Poljan finished with 30 points and 23 rebounds, and Matthew Fata scored 15 points for Lansing Catholic.

Brandon Allen scored 17 points to lead Haslett (10-6). Junior Lee Mott added 11 points, while John Hudgins chipped in 10 for the Vikings.
