Thomas Keys hit a right-handed floater in the lane at the buzzer to give Nyack a 65-64 double-overtime win against visiting Pearl River Thursday.
“That’s his bread-and-butter shot,” Indians’ coach Ethan Smith said.
The Pirates took the lead with six seconds remaining when Kevin Degnan scored inside to give Pearl River a 64-63 lead.
Smith chose not to call a timeout, allowing Keys take the ball the length of the court and into the paint before letting the game-winner go just before time expired.
“It’s a big boost,” Smith said. “This season we’ve lost four or five games at the last second.”
Degnan was lights out for Pearl River (11-5). The Fairfield-bound senior scored 43 points, including all 27 of the Pirates points in the second half.
The 6-foot-8 forward also scored his 1,000 point at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
“It was definitely nice,” said Degnan of the achievement. “Great players at Pearl River have reached that milestone. It’s going to be nice to see my name up on the gym wall.”
Jordan Williams led Nyack (7-11) with 23 points, including five 3s. Ethan Smith added 10 points.
“It always felt like we could play with the top teams in the county,” Smith said. “We just couldn’t completely close the door on them. It’s a good win.”
