Boys playoff roundup: Rams eliminate Shreve in Class 5A


Al Francis fired in 25 points to lead three players with at least 20 as the 16th-seeded Acadiana Rams fought back from an early deficit to defeat 17th-seeded Captain Shreve 81-76 in the first round Friday at Acadiana, ending the Gators’ season with a record of 17-11.

Edward Cormier scored 23 points and Keithon Mouton added 21 as Acadiana improved to 20-9 on the season. The Rams face a tough matchup in Tuesday’s second round as they travel to face top-seeded Scotlandville.

Senior Jesse McWright ended his high-school career with a 31-point effort, while sophomore Toronco Loston poured in 23 as Captain Shreve wrapped up its season at 17-11.

Dutchtown 56, Southwood 53: At Dutchtown, the sixth-seeded Griffins survived a tough test against the upset-minded and 27th-seeded Cowboys (18-12). Dutchtown advances to face the Helen Cox/Hammond winner in the second round on Tuesday.

Natchitoches Central 76, Slidell 47: At Natchitoches, the second-seeded Chiefs outscored the 31st-seeded Tigers 28-9 in the third period en route to the win.

Danny Cohen poured in 27 points, Cameron Lard fired in 23 and Austin Guy added 14 as Natchitoches Central improved to 27-5. The Chiefs will host 15th-seeded New Iberia in the second round Tuesday.

Weston Mitchell scored 11 points to lead Slidell in the loss.


Salmen 62, Minden 47: At Salmen, the eighth-seeded Spartans eliminated the 25th-seeded Crimson Tide (19-10) with the win and will face the winner of Tara/Beau Chene in the second round Tuesday.


North Webster 61, Union Parish 58: At Union Parish, the 17th-seeded Knights (24-9) slipped into the second round with the road win over the 16th-seeded Farmers. North Webster will host top-seed John Curtis on Tuesday.

Patterson 68, Evangel 43: At Patterson, the seventh-seeded Lumberjacks rolled past the 26th-seeded Eagles (17-14) to advance to face St. Louis in the second round Tuesday.


North Caddo 58, Opelousas Catholic 46: At Opelousas Catholic, the 28th-seeded Rebels pulled the shocker on the road, taking out the fifth-seeded Vikings to advance to the second round.

Robert Williams had a huge game, scoring 16 points to go with 23 rebounds and eight blocked shots, while Jontavian Brooks fired in 15 points, dished out 10 assists and had five steals as North Caddo improved to 10-18 on the season. The Rebels will host No. 12 Doyle on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Lakeview 100, Runnels 41: At Lakeview, the second-seeded Gators dismantled the No. 31 Raiders by 59 points to advance to the second round. Lakeview (25-4) will travel to No. 18 Rosepine on Tuesday.

Many 54, Newman 41: At Many, the No. 10 Tigers (19-7) defeated the 23rd-seeded Greenies to move on to the second round, where they will travel to seventh-seeded Welsh on Tuesday.

Homer 57, Jeanerette 43: At Jeanerette, the No. 17 Pelicans advanced with the road victory over the No. 16 Tigers. Homer (15-14) faces a tough second-round opponent when they host Riverside on Tuesday.

French Settlement 62, Calvary 59: At French Settlement, the No. 9 Lions narrowly beat the No. 24 Cavaliers (10-12) to advance to face Sterlington in the second round.


Plain Dealing 58, East Iberville 41: At Plain Dealing, the No. 12 Lions started strong, holding the No. 21 Tigers to three first-quarter points, and ended with a flourish, scoring 20 in the fourth period, to advance to the second round.

Keldrick Carper led Plain Dealing (19-8) with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Chiner Long scored 11 and dished out six assists. Willie Turks poured in 10 points for the Lions, who will travel to No. 5 Christian Life on Tuesday.

Arcadia 78, St. Martin’s Episcopal 37: At Arcadia, the No. 1 Hornets (25-3) had little trouble dispatching the No. 32 Saints to advance. Arcadia hosts 16th-seeded Ascension Episcopal in the second round on Tuesday.

Country Day 77, Haynesville 40: At Metairie, the No. 4 Cajuns ended the No. 29 Golden Tornado (6-13) with the win. Country Day advances to face 13th-seeded Central Catholic in the second round.

White Castle 75, Ringgold 46: At White Castle, the No. 10 Bulldogs ended the No. 23 Redskins’ (14-13) season with the victory. White Castle advances to face Grambling in the second round.


Doyline 78, Grace Christian 56: At Doyline, the 14th-seeded Panthers built a 19-point halftime lead then took the air out of the ball in the second half to advance over the 19th-seeded Warriors.

Doyline (17-14) placed four players in double figures, led by Lawrence Hester with 18. Justice Lindsey fired in 16, Jaylan Jackson poured in 13 and Donnie Brooks added 12 in the win.

Doyline will travel to Anacoco in the second round Tuesday.

Lacassine 70, Stanley 54: At Lacassine, the 10th-seeded Cardinals ended the season of the 23rd-seeded Panthers with the win and advance to face Zwolle in the second round.

Alize Elam led Stanley (9-23) with 18 points and Michael Crawford added 14.

Florien 87, Saline 56: At Florien, the top-seeded Blackcats (39-3) rolled past the 32nd-seeded Bobcats to advance to the second round. Florien will host 17th-seeded Simpson on Tuesday.

Zwolle 72, Maurepas 41: At Zwolle, the seventh-seeded Hawks (26-10) easily cruised by the 26th-seeded Wolves and will host Lacassine in the second round.

Hosanna Christian 78, Negreet 39: At Baker, the eighth-seeded Blazers (27-12) dismissed the 25th-seeded Indians (10-24) to advance to face Choudrant in the second round.

Weston 84, Converse 40: At Weston, the fifth-seeded Wolves manhandled the 28th-seeded Wildcats (6-26) to advance to face Monterey in the second round.

Monterey 50, Castor 35: At Monterey, the 12th-seeded Wolves eliminated the 21st-seeded Tigers (10-24) and will face Weston in the second round.

Choudrant 57, Hicks 42: At Choudrant, the ninth-seeded Aggies advanced with the win over the 24th-seeded Pirates. Choudrant travels to Hosanna Christian Tuesday.


Ebarb 78, Hackberry 43: At Ebarb, the eighth-seeded Rebels (18-17) trounced the 25th-seeded Mustangs to advance. Ebarb will host Summerfield on Tuesday.

Pleasant Hill 77, First Baptist Christian 23: At Pleasant Hill, the fifth-seeded Eagles (18-16) walloped the 28th-seeded Eagles to advance to face Johnson Bayou in the second round.

Gibsland-Coleman 82, Downsville 28: At Gibsland-Coleman, the sixth-seeded Bulldogs (19-15) whipped the 27th-seeded Demons to advance to face Family Christian Tuesday.

Summerfield 69, Bishop McManus 40: At Summerfield, the ninth-seeded Rebels (21-14) eliminated the 24th-seeded Kings and will travel to face Ebarb in the second round Tuesday.
