The Highland High School boys soccer team exceeded expectations but was still hoping for more following a 2-0 state Class B regional semifinal loss to Rye Neck at Faller Field in Middletown on Wednesday.
Rye Neck, the Section 1 champ, plays Suffolk County champion Mattituck in Saturday’s state regional final on Long Island.
Highland, which won its first Section 9 title in 17 years, finished their season at 11-8.
“Our objective was to get past the first round of sectionals and they won a sectional title. We did what we set out to do. They put Highland soccer back on the map,” Highland coach Terri Cilento said.
“We’re sad it’s over, but it was quite a ride. The boys are proud of themselves for everything they accomplished.”
Luis Galeano scored both Rye Neck goals, scoring off a rebound in the 43rd minute and a header in the 74th minute.
“Today, they were the better team,” said Highland junior Colin Ivich. “We gave it our all and left it all out on the field. We were happy to be in this position and we would have liked to come out with a win, but no one can take away the history we made this year being the first Highland boys soccer Class B champs.”
