The game was billed as a Section 1 vs. Section 9 challenge and Rhinebeck High School’s boys soccer team accepted that challenge.
And the Hawks won.
Ryan Euell scored twice, including the game-winner with seven minutes left in the second half as Section 9’s Rhinebeck defeated Section 1’s Bronxville, 2-1, on Monday at Valhalla High School. Walter Gadsby and Eric Rodriguez had assists on the winning goal.
“We were really excited to come down and play Bronxville. As long as I can remember, they’ve been a powerhouse in Westchester and Section 1,” Rhinebeck coach Justin Wiesenthal said. “They are great competition and we treated it as a test for ourselves. We tried to treat this as much like postseason as possible.”
Bronxville’s Sam Aherne scored on a corner kick in the sixth minute, which was the first goal Rhinebeck (12-0) and goalkeeper Spencer Hutchins (six saves) allowed this season.
Euell tied the game for Rhinebeck with about seven minutes left in the first half. Euell’s game-winning goal was chipped over Bronxville goalkeeper Joe Pepe’s head.
“We defended very well after the initial goal,” Wiesenthal said. “They just kept doing what they’ve been doing all season and were able to spring Euell loose once again.”
Rhinebeck hosts Ellenville at 4:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
