Boys soccer: Webutuck shows 'guts' in overtime, again

By

By now, Webutuck High School boys soccer coach Kevin Doyle should know better when he asks his team to show its “guts.”

For the third time in as many games, at the back end of a grueling stretch, the Warriors went to overtime on Friday. And, for the third time in as many games, the Warriors went away with a victory.

Webutuck defeated Arlington B in overtime, 3-2, with Chris Reed scoring off a penalty kick in the 89th minute. Reed scored the game-winning goal in each of the three overtime victories

“I asked them at the beginning of overtime,” Doyle said, “I said, ‘I know you have the heart and the determination. I want to see your guts in overtime.’

“Everyone was looking at me saying, ‘Coach, we’re doing it!’ “

The win caps a stretch in which Webutuck (10-3-1) played seven games in 11 days.

Anthony Torres opened the scoring six minutes into the game, before assisting on Andrew Thrasher’s tally four minutes later.

Peter Petrillo got Arlington B on the board midway through the second half, and Andrew Markoe tied the game in the 79th minute off a Matthew Duffy assist.

Arlington B outshot Webutuck, 10-5. Hunter Coulthard stopped eight Admirals shots.

Webutuck hosts Mount Academy on Tuesday.
