Brevard teams set to tip off in regional boys basketball action

By

Several Brevard County high school boys basketball teams are on a roll, and they get their chance to continue — with greater reward — tonight in the FHSAA regional quarterfinals.

Melbourne, Holy Trinity and Florida Air come off district championships and with rather successful regular seasons behind them. Each hosts a game tonight at 7, while another district champion got an unexpected gift.

Atlantic Christian withdrew from the playoffs, meaning Covenant Christian won’t play tonight but has advanced to Tuesday’s regional semifinal round.

Melbourne has never won a regional game, but the Bulldogs face a Fort Myers team tonight that has at least one common opponent. While Melbourne won two of three from Martin County, the Tigers defeated Fort Myers in a regular season tournament game at Fort Myers, 75-64, on Jan. 11.

Holy Trinity improved to 24-3 with a big win over Cocoa (22-6) in the Class 4A, District 8 championship on Saturday. Holy Trinity gets Port Orange Atlantic tonight, and Cocoa is at Lake Highland Prep, last year’s Class 4A state champion.

Florida Air (25-1) begins its playoff run at home against Village Academy of Delray Beach.
