They had to wait an extra day and drive a little farther, but the Melbourne High girls soccer team earned a return trip to the state tournament with a 1-0 win in Holiday against Mitchell High on Saturday.

Melbourne will defend its Class 4A state title beginning Friday at 12:30 p.m. against Lakewood Ranch at Eastern Florida State College. The Bulldogs went to penalty kicks against Mitchell at Anclote High in a game delayed and moved from New Port Richey by heavy rain.

“Mitchell played a great game and had some really good players all across the field,” Melbourne coach Rosanna Lord said. “The girls definitely stayed focused.”

They had to stay focused for 80 minutes of regulation and 20 more of overtime. Then, with the teams in penalty kicks, Bulldogs goalkeeper Riley Greer made the deciding save for a 5-4 advantage. All five Melbourne players made their penalty kicks: Katie Reed, Keira McCarthy, Olivia DeJong, Jade Smith and Hannah DeBose.

Melbourne joined Merritt Island as Brevard County state-bound teams. The Mustangs won their way into the Class 3A semifinals with a 3-0 Friday win at Largo.
