The Byrd baseball team (20-13, 10-4) is just one win away from the District 1-5A title after an 8-0 win against Haughton on Thursday.
Pitcher Eric Miller (2-1) got the win while John Snyder (2 RBIs), Zack Flash (two doubles), Steele Netterville (two hits) and Trent Touchet (two doubles) all contributed.
Haughton’s Brad Bockhaus picked up one of the Bucs’ (13-19, 5-9) six hits in the loss.
The Yellow Jackets hold a tiebreaker against Airline (17-16, 10-4), whom they beat 2-1 in the first series of the season.
Byrd ends the district season Friday with a trip to Haughton at 6 p.m.
Airline 2, Parkway 1
The Vikings recovered from an 11-inning loss Wednesday to snatch a close seven-inning game Thursday and stay in the district title race.
Kyle Backofen picked up the win by outdueling Parkway’s Rob Harper, and Backofen struck out 11 batters in the complete game. Harper also threw a complete game with eight strikeouts.
Airline could win the outright district title with a Friday win at home against Parkway (16-17, 8-6) and a Byrd loss.
The Vikings would technically be district co-champs if both Airline and Byrd won or lost, but Byrd would get the automatic playoff bid because of the Jackets’ series win.
According to kenramsey.com, Airline is No. 32 in Class 5A before Thursday’s win.
