Cam Northern sparks Jeff past Floyd Central 66-37

Jeffersonville backup quarterback Cam Northern carved apart Floyd Central with his feet and right arm on Friday night.

Northern, a sophomore promoted to starter with an injury to Jamal Britt, ran for four first-half touchdowns and threw for 314 yards as the Red Devils, ranked No.9 in Class 6-A, overpowered the Highlanders 66-37 on the turf at Ron Weigleb Stadium.

Jeffersonville (5-0, 4-0 in the Hoosier Hills Conference) didn’t miss Britt or starting running back Isaiah Mack – both offensive leaders were sidelined to nurse health issues – as it ran its no-huddle, quick-strike attack unopposed. The Devils threatened to accumulate as many penalties as points as they were flagged an incredible 22 times for 167 yards, but the Highlanders could not take advantage of the undisciplined mistakes.

The Red Devils had too many weapons, with Northern the one of the highest caliber. Northern finished with five rushing touchdowns, and he completed 18 of 32 passes for one touchdown during the three-hour marathon.

Jeffersonville had targeted the Highlanders (2-3, 1-2) since an eight-turnover upset last season.

“We’ve been scheming this for a year, for 365 days, and it was pretty good,” Jeffersonville coach Lonnie Oldham said. “I’m proud of how dominant we were. When it kind of snowballed on them, they couldn’t get it back.”

Jeffersonville’s offense did not have a slow gear. Northern opened the throttle on the first two drives, connecting with Brandon Coleman for 36 yards to set up his first sneak – if a 6-foot-3, 225-pound quarterback can sneak anywhere – from a yard for a score. He found Coleman twice on the next drive and capped it by plowing over from a yard out.

The big blow came from a much greater distance. Northern, fading left to pass, spotted a gap on the right side and took off, breaking into the secondary untouched and veering back across the field to win the footrace to the goal line for a 40-yard touchdown and a 22-0 lead.

The first of Floyd’s miscues on special teams opened the door for the blowout. The Highlanders failed to field the ensuing kickoff, with the Devils covering the loose ball on the 15. Jordan Barnett scored two plays later.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys and it showed early,” Floyd Central coach Brian Glesing said.

Floyd Central had a fleeting moment of recovery when Gaige Klingsmith dashed 64 yards for a score, but the Devils responded with Fahuwu Momoh’s 31-yard field goal and Northern’s fourth short score for a 39-9 lead at the half.

The onslaught continued in the second half as Northern threw a 10-yard TD pass to Anthony Southers, ran for another 1-yard score and threw a 39-yard bomb to Coleman that set Barnett’s 10-yard run for a 59-23 lead.

“We tried to be aggressive and it hurt us a couple of times,” Glesing said. “But that’s the only way to win the game. They’re going pick you apart. We just had too many breakdowns.”

Northern ran for 85 yards while Barnett totaled 96.

“When we got inside the 10, we had to play bully ball,” Oldham said. “We can win more than one way. Everybody thinks we are finesse but we can run the ball. But I just like throwing it. I’m a throwing guy.”

The Highlanders did find a second-half rhythm with Klingsmith’s second touchdown, Kimm’s perfect 51-yard connection with Adam Wallace, and Garry Posey’s 12-yard run with 4:11 left and his 57-yard burst in the final minute.
