Cedar Creek senior Caley Pyles led the Lady Cougars to the LHSAA Class 1A state title with a 6-0 shutout of Ascension Catholic.

“I felt like I was in a dream, because we’ve waited so long for this,” Pyles told The Times. “It was almost surreal.”

It was the first state softball for Cedar Creek since the 1994 squad, led by current coach Julie Riser, won.

Pyles pitched the Lady Cougars (19-12) to the win and her bases loaded double in the fourth inning plated three runs and put the game out of reach.

“We were a 12-seed but something started clicking for us in the playoffs,” said Pyles, who will attend Louisiana Tech next fall. “This was the end for me athletically.

The Lady Cougars advanced to the championship game with a 7-4 win over Catholic Pointe Coupee (23-4) with Pyles pitching a six-hitter. Anna Roberson was 3-for-4, while Pyles and Nicole Brashear had two hits and two RBIs apiece, in Cedar Creek’s 13-hit attack.

The Lady Cougars scored five runs in the fourth inning to put the game away.

Florien 7, Quitman 4: Missie McMillian, mother of Lady Blackcats pitcher Abbey McMillian, sneaked some Taco Bell into Steamboat Bills, a Lake Charles-area seafood restaurant for her daughter following Florien’s second consecutive Class B title win on Saturday night. Apparently the young McMillian prefers the run for the border.

That’s understandable after the sophomore tossed a five-hitter for the win for Florien (28-1) which suffered its only loss to Haughton in the West Monroe Tournament.

“This one was more difficult because we went through a lot of peaks and valleys to get this one,” said McMillian. “When we had those, especially me because I struggled some, my team always had my back. My defense was outstanding for the most part and when we really need to we came together as a team and pulled through.”

Among the top hitters in the title game were Haylee Tidwell (2-for-3), Bailey McCleary (2-4), Caroline Mathews (2-4) and Kaitlyn Davis with two hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs.

Explosive Florien (28-1) bounced into a second consecutive Class B title game with a 12-1 run-rule win against Fairview (21-4).

The crushing blows a walk-off grand slam in the fifth by Adrianna Phillips in support of pitcher Abbey McMillian.

All-Academic team: The 2014 LHSAA-Exxon Mobile All-Academic softball composite team was announced on Friday with several area players making the prestigious squad.

Parkway senior Carol Cash, along with Evangel’s Whitney Usie and Kaleigh Opbroek, were honored for being student-athletes with a 4.0 grade point average. Arcadia’s Jimmitriv Roberson, Castor’s Lori Wallace and Natchitoches Central’s Victoria Leone also made the team.

Four Many athletes were named including Shelby Clifton, Laken Ebarb, Sarah Heard and Sabrina Ross.

Few winners: Evangel was the last Shreveport-Bossier team to win a state title when the Lady Eagles won the 2011 Class 2A crown with a 14-4 win against Kinder.

No Shreveport-Bossier school has won a state softball title in Class 3A or higher, according to the LHSAA media guide. Southwood came the closest twice under former coach Greg Frazier, whose Lady Cowboys fell 1-0 to West Monroe in the 1999 5A state title tilt and in 1997 when they lost 3-0 to Barbe.
