CHAMPIONS: Wapahani wins Class 2A baseball title

By

For the first time ever, Wapahani can claim a new title: baseball state champions.
The Raiders won the first crown in Delaware County history Saturday with a 2-0 victory against Evansville Mater Dei in the Class 2A title game at Victory Field in Indianapolis. The Raiders, who came into the postseason ranked No. 1, finished at 30-4.
“It feels great,” pitcher Zack Thompson said. “Couldn’t pick a better team to do it with.”
Thompson, the Raiders’ sophomore ace, tossed a dominant shutout and ran his record to 13-0. Wapahani’s runs came when Taylor McKee scored on an error in the first inning and on Hayden Castor’s RBI double to score Jared Coats in the fourth.
The title came in the 31st season of coach Brian Dudley’s tenure and 10 years after the Raiders’ last and only other appearance in the state title game.
The 2004 Wapahani team was one of three Delaware County squads that had finished as the state runner-up prior to Wapahani’s win on Saturday to give the county a crown. The 1980 Northside team and 2008 Cowan Blackhawks also fell in state title games.
McKee and Castor were two of three players to have two hits for Wapahani on Saturday. Senior infielder Austin White was the other. Thompson allowed five hits on the mound. He struck out nine batters and didn’t walk any.
