Nikki Bella may very well be in the wrong sport.
She’s already won a WWE Divas Championship, but her ability to take and dish out body slams, clotheslines and power-bombs pales in comparison to her exceptional skills on the soccer field.
Back in her heyday at Chapparal High in Scottsdale, Ariz., Bella was a star sweeper and even brought the Firebirds a state title.
“I won MVP my freshman year,” Bella said. “That had never happened before. I was pretty good!”
I caught up with Bella to chop-it-up about everything from why she didn’t pursue soccer further to what game she dominates her boyfriend and fellow WWE star John Cena in to why she once had to keep a tooth under her tongue during a match.
Jason Jordan: I know you went to Chapparal High in Scottsdale, Ariz.; were you a jock there?
Nikki Bella: Yes, I played soccer! I was sweeper. We were very good. We won state one year and we always usually made it to the finals or somewhere close. We always had the articles written on us and all of that. We were definitely a top team.
JJ: Did you get offers to play in college?
NB: You know I was actually going to sign a full ride with Arizona State and just before signing I snapped my leg in half. It was crazy! They didn’t want to honor the scholarship because they weren’t sure how I was gonna heal and, you know, when you’re young and you’re talented you’re just like “whatever.” I ended up playing at Grossmont College. That was about three years after; I was scared to get on a field for a while after that injury.
JJ: What was your shining moment on the field?
NB: As a freshman I was first team all state and first team all region and I was named MVP. That had never happened for a defensive player so I was really proud of that.
JJ: Let’s take it random; what do yellow traffic lights mean to you?
NB: Speed up! Well, when I know I can make it, it definitely means go faster.
JJ: What restaurant has the best burgers?
NB: Tower23 in San Diego has Kobe beef sliders and they’re absolutely the best!
JJ: Both in their prime, who wins a heavyweight bout between Mike Tyson and Muhammad Ali?
NB: Ooh! It’s like you want to say Muhammad Ali because that’s what you’re supposed to say, but I’m gonna say Mike Tyson. I think he’d win.
JJ: Everyone’s played the game “Truth or Dare;” what’s the craziest dare you’ve ever had to complete?
NB: (Laughs) Probably streaking.
JJ: Are wrestlers the best athletes in the world?
NB: No, I’d have to say football players are the best athletes. You have to run, be strong, be agile and have great hand-eye coordination.
JJ: What’s the worst injury you’ve ever sustained in a match?
NB: Probably my tooth getting knocked out. I actually kept the tooth under my tongue for the whole match. That was definitely pretty tough!
JJ: You tap a car in a parking lot and no one’s around; do you leave a note or move to a different row?
NB: (Laughs) Leave a note! I strongly believe in karma!
JJ: Obviously you’re a competitor, what random board game are you undefeated at?
NB: (Laughs) Scrabble!
JJ: What do you dominate your boyfriend John Cena in?
NB: (Laughs) Twister! Easy!
JJ: What’s the most random song you know every word to?
NB: Ashley Simpson’s song Autobiography.
JJ: How would you use a rewind button in life?
NB: I wouldn’t use it. If I did it’d be things like John and I’s first kiss or one more moment with my grandfather.
JJ: Finish this sentence: I can’t function without…
NB: My iPhone.
JJ: What’s your favorite gadget?
NB: Besides the iPhone I’d probably say my iPad.
JJ: Talk or text?
NB: I love both, but I’d rather talk.
JJ: Do you clear out your inbox or are you a text hoarder?
NB: I clear out all of my messages except for my messages from John and messages from my Nana.
JJ: What song makes Nikki Bella have to get up and get her two-step on?
NB: Ooh! Brittney Spears’ I’m a Slave!
JJ: What’s the best advice you’ve ever gotten?
NB: Never give up!
JJ: You’ve unfortunately found yourself in the Witness Protection Program; what’s your cover name?
NB: (Laughs) It would be Rocky Shay!
JJ: Talk about what fans can expect next from Nikki Bella?
NB: We have Total Divas every Sunday on E! at 9 p.m. Also, you can see us every Monday night on Raw and every Friday night on SmackDown. And if you can’t get enough Nikki Bella, our WWE Network streams 24/7! You can watch me on there any time you want. Also, you’ll see us on Top Chef and The Soup soon! What can I say, the Bellas are taking over!
