LA QUINTA – One run was all that was needed to decide the outcome of the Desert Valley League baseball opener on a windy evening in the desert.

Behind great defense and a stellar pitching performance by Chris Burciaga, Indio High School got the better end of a pitcher’s duel Tuesday, beating La Quinta 1-0.

Burciaga allowed just four hits and struck out one in the shutout.

“Chris was outstanding,” Rajahs coach Mark Brenner said. “He showed great control and had a lot of poise and got out of a big situation in the third inning.”

The situation came when the Blackhawks had the bases loaded with no outs but Burciaga forced a 1-2-3 double play before a groundout ended the rally.

Juanny Siqueiros also made a big play as he threw out a La Quinta baserunner attempting to score in the second inning.

Indio scored the only run of the game when Jonathan Diaz singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Jaime Rocha hit an RBI-single in the second inning.

“They played well and made some good plays,” Blackhawks coach Brent Conley said.

La Quinta starting pitcher Angel Palomares allowed five hits and struck out three in seven innings.

The two teams play again at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Indio High School.
