Eighth-ranked Western Dubuque knocked off No. 2 Sioux City Heelan in the quarterfinals of the Class 4-A state girls’ basketball tournament with a 53-44 win.

State girls’ basketball tournament: Brackets for all classes

The Bobcats (22-2) got a game-high 21 points from Rose Simon-Ressler.

Megan Maahs added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bobcats.

Jenna Bork led Heelan with 18 points.

Three of the top four ranked teams in Class 4-A lost in the first round. In earlier 4-A action today No. 7 Ballard knocked off No. 3 Davenport Assumption, 55-45. Fourth-ranked Dallas Center-Grimes lost Tuesday to No. 6 Carlisle, 53-48. No. 1 Harlan opened the tournament with a 52-50 win Tuesday against No. 10 North Scott.
