The Clewiston High School football team scored early and often as the Tigers whipped visiting Avon Park 51-7 Friday in a District 4A-6 matchup at Cane Field.

Clewiston (5-0, 1-0) dominated throughout the night with a bruising rushing attack supported by quarterback Davis Witt.

Witt passed for three touchdowns in the first half, hooking up twice with flanker Angelo Tolbert for 15 and 36 yards. The other score was a 32-yard throw to senior Lenorris Gaines.

“We spread the ball around and controlled the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball<‘ Clewiston coach Pete Walker said. “Our tackling was very good and it’s an important district win.”

Clewiston went to intermission with a 43-point lead and rested their starters for the entire second half, which was under a running clock.

Tigers senior tailback Dominik Spain led rushers with 102 yards on just eight carries. Backup freshman tailback Klamenta Jones chipped in with 91 yards on six tries, including the final Clewiston touchdown.

The Clewiston starting defense was solid in the first half as they limited the Red Devils to only 31 yards of total offense on 21 snaps. Junior linebacker Andre Taylor led the defensive charge with five solo tackles, including two sacks. He also recovered a fumble.

The victory kept the Tigers perfect at 5-0 on the season and 1-0 in district play. The young Avon Park squad dropped to 0-6 overall and suffered their first district loss.
