THE WINNER: Sarah McCauley


School: Chase Collegiate School (Waterbury, Conn.)
Grade: Senior
Position: Forward
Height: 5-foot-7

Athletic achievement: The returning Gatorade State Player of the Year, she led the Highlanders to a 15-3-3 record and the New England Prep School Athletic Council Class D championship this past season. McCauley scored 52 goals and passed for 17 assists with 10 hat tricks in 21 games. She was a four-time NEPSAC Class D All-Star, a three-time Boston Globe All-Scholastic and concluded her prep soccer career with 195 goals and 74 assists.

Academic excellence: McCauley has maintained an A-minus average.

Exemplary character: Captain of the Chase Collegiate Math Team, she has volunteered locally as a youth mentor in addition to fundraising to combat breast cancer and assist AIDS research. She’s also donated her time to the Afghan Youth Sports Exchange, which helps empower Afghani girls through soccer.


“I didn’t see any players that were as effective as Sarah McCauley this year,” said Kristin Runey, head coach of Suffield (Conn.) Academy. “She was the reason her team beat us. She singlehandedly carried her team. She’s fast, strong, skilled and has a great sense of the game.”

THE FUTURE: McCauley has verbally committed to Yale.
