Corydon took control early, built a 20-point halftime lead and went on to beat host Silver Creek 49-25 in a girls’ Mid-Southern Conference basketball game Thursday night.
Sophomore forward Ashley Oliver got the visiting Lady Panthers off to a good start, scoring twice as Corydon ran out to a 6-0 lead.
Two free throws by Silver Creek sophomore Bailee Popp made it 6-2 moments later, and two empty trips by Corydon gave the Lady Dragons a shot at keeping it close.
But Silver Creek, which had five turnovers in the opening five minutes of the game, couldn’t take advantage.
Corydon closed out the final 3:06 on a 9-0 run, including a three-pointer and a steal leading to a three-point play by senior forward Marie Rothrock. That run made it 15-2 at the end of the first quarter, during which Silver Creek had six turnovers and zero field goals.
“Our defense in the first half was pretty good,” said Corydon coach Michael Uhl. “We took away the things they wanted to do.”
Silver Creek started the second quarter with a turnover, and coach Scott Schoen had seen enough. He called a timeout and challenged his team. The Lady Dragons played harder and smarter after that, but they were still outmatched by a good Corydon squad.
Rothrock scored on a three-point play to make it 18-2 with 7:16 left in the half.
Silver Creek responded with a three-point goal by Alexis Barnett to make it 18-5, and on Corydon’s next possession the Lady Panthers turned it over.
With a chance to cut the deficit to a manageable number with plenty of time left in the second quarter, the Lady Dragons came up empty. From there on out, it was all Corydon.
Three straight field goals by senior forward Reagan Mosley propelled the Lady Panthers to a 24-5 lead with 3:38 left in the half.
Corydon senior forward Taylor Frederick hit a field goal just before the buzzer and the Lady Panthers led 28-8 at halftime.
The Lady Dragons started the second half with three straight turnovers and Corydon scored each time. A field goal by Mosley and two baskets by Oliver made it 34-8 at the 6:35 mark.
Moments later, Frederick scored, and followed with a steal that led to a three-pointer by Aly Chambers to make it 39-8 midway through the third quarter.
By the time Silver Creek got its first points of the second half — two free throws by Barnett with 2:31 left in the third quarter — it was 41-10. Corydon led 45-15 going into the fourth quarter.
Silver Creek, to its credit, kept fighting and cut the deficit. A three-pointer by freshman Lauren Polston made it 47-25 inside the final two minutes, but the Lady Dragons would get no closer.
For the game, Mosley scored 12 points and Rothrock added nine for Corydon (10-5, 4-2 in the Mid-Southern Conference). The Lady Panthers had four players score eight points or more.
“We were balanced again,” Uhl said of the scoring. “We’re playing good team ball.”
Silver Creek (4-12, 2-4), which could very well meet the Lady Panthers in the Class 3-A Sectional, was paced by Barnett and freshman Haley Baxter, who scored five points each.
