ELK GROVE – In what has become the most shocking move of the offseason, the Cosumnes Oaks Wolfpack dismissed the only head football coach they’ve known.
Ryan Gomes, who has been on the Cosumnes Oaks sidelines since the school opened in 2008, was not retained by the school.
Gomes led Cosumnes Oaks to a 7-4 overall record, en route to their first league title last season. The Wolfpack suffered just one defeat in the Sierra Valley Conference, which was due to a forfeit for playing an ineligible athlete.
In the Sac-Joaquin Section Division II playoffs, Cosumnes Oaks lost to Whitney 34-9 in the opening round.
The Wolfpack will join steeper competition in 2014 when they move into the Capital Valley Conference, competing against Whitney, Del Campo, Antelope and Roseville.
Gomes told News10 he will be on the sidelines with another school this coming season, and he joins fellow varsity head coach Joe Cattolico, also available after resigning at Pleasant Grove earlier in the offseason.
Cattolico could be considered by Cosumnes Oaks as a replacement for Gomes next season.
