The Powel Crosley Jr. YMCA Tigersharks placed 19th out of 240 teams at the recent 2014 YMCA National Long Course Championships at the Indiana University Natatorium on the campus of IUPUI.
The team was led by Wyoming High School graduate Jonathan Rutter, who will attend and swim for Yale University in the fall. Rutter placed in the top six in all four individual events. He won the 200 breaststroke for the second consecutive year with a dazzling time of 2:15.96, lowering the national record by almost two seconds. Rutter previously held the National YMCA Record of 2:17.86. Rutter also placed sixth in the 400 Free, 4:08.37, third in the 100 breaststroke, 1:03.59 and second in the 200 IM, 2:06.71.
Grant Carr of St. Xavier High School placed 23rd in the 100 free, with a time of 55.45. Payton Keiner, Cincinnati Christian School, scored 15th in the 100 backstroke, 1:06.41. It marked the first time she scored points at a YMCA National Championship. Keiner also placed twenty-fourth in the 200 backstroke, 2:24.30 and 50 backstroke, 31.59.
Several Tigershark relays placed in the finals. The 800 free relay, consisting of Rutter, Carson Burt, Stephen Barrett and Grant Carr placed seventh, crushing the team record by eight seconds with a new standard of 7:50.61. The 400 medley relay team of Michael Dechering, Rutter, Carr, and Burt placed 12th with a time of 4:00.12. The 400 free relay team of Rutter, Burt, Max Chou and Carr, placed 10th with a time of 3:36.97.
The Powel Crosley, Jr. YMCA Swim Team is a year-round competitive team, participating in both YMCA and USA Swimming meets. Swimmers, from ages 6 to 18, participate with groups according to their age and ability. Many qualities are developed through competitive swimming such as physical conditioning, self-confidence, sportsmanship, character building, and self-discipline.
