D3 regional wrestling: Westfield edges Laconia for title at Markesan

Laconia came close to competing at next week’s Cedar Grove-Belgium sectional as a regional team champion, as Westfield edged it 241-232 for the title Saturday.

The Spartans will have half its lineup at individual sectionals, as seven 13 wrestlers placed in the top two to advance

Three of them did as champions. At 145, seventh-ranked Zach Coffeen won the title with two pins, including one over Lourdes Academy’s Brian Dowling in the final. At 195, Dustin Deich was the champ with a pair of pins, sticking Markesan’s Jake Straks in the title match. At 220, Eli Moses finished first with a semifinal pin and then a 5-2 decision over Westfield’s Brandon Peters in the championship.

Alec Potter (113), Dustin Hobbs (152), Mason Lind (160) and Nick Zimmerman (285) each were a runner-up for Laconia, while Quinn Lasecki (120), Jared Greiten (126), Caleb Hobb (132), Brandon Wiese (170) and Mike Ramsey (182) all took third.

Winnebago Lutheran took fifth in the standings and one sectional qualifier. That was Luke Meihack, who had the Vikings’ top performance by winning a championship at 120 pounds. He had a pin in the semifinals and then edged Westfield’s CJ Kuhl 4-3 in the final. Taking third for WLA was Jesus Saucedo (113), Mitchell White (152) and Dylan Sook (285), while Zach Olson (106), Isaiah LaVanway (126), Noah Poss (138), Matthew Gugler (145) and Adam Rohde (170) all took fourth.
