The Colts clobbered the host Golden Eagles, who had started 4-0 for the first time in program history, 65-16 Friday night.

DeSales’ defense forced seven turnovers and five of those (including two directly) led to touchdowns for the Colts (5-0, 2-0 in Class 2A, District 4).

“They gave us fits early in the game. Our offense couldn’t get going early and we made some mistakes and had some turnovers,” DeSales coach Harold Davis said. “But our defense stepped up.”

The Golden Eagles (4-1, 1-1) played without senior quarterback Robert Bendingfield. The fourth-ranked passer in 2A, and his team’s leading rusher, was suspended for the game due to a violation of teams rules.

“The difference is our quarterback was suspended, that was a big dropoff,” Shawnee coach Jason Wyatt said.

The Golden Eagles’ quarterbacks — they used three in the first three quarters — threw five interceptions while Shawnee also lost two fumbles.

“They were young turnovers,” Wyatt said.

The Colts, who outscored the Golden Eagles 154-12 in previous three meetings (including 49-0 last year), scored their first two touchdowns off of Shawnee miscues. Those scores came within a 45-second span in the first quarter.

First, DeSales sophomore linebacker Bryce Elzy picked off a pass by Damien Allen, who started in Bendingfield’s place, and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown on the first play of Shawnee’s second series. The PAT failed, but the Colts still led 6-0.

Then on the Golden Eagles’ first play after the subsequent kickoff Allen fumbled while he was sacked and standout defensive end Bryant Pirtle Jr. picked it up and ran it in for a 25-yard touchdown. Matt Ruxer’s 2-point conversion run made it 14-0.

Shawnee, which had outscored its first four foes 150-45, had two highlights in the first half. One was a converted fake punt out of its own end zone. The other was a 72-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Jonas Griffith with 5:31 to play in the first half. Allen’s conversion pass to Jaylen Wesley made it 14-8.

That was as close as the Golden Eagles would get, though.

Logan McDonough’s interception set up Pirtle’s 3-yard touchdown run with 2:09 to play in the second quarter. Pirtle’s conversion run made it 22-8.

“We came out and they gave us a different look on offense, but we figured it out and pretty much got back there and disrupted their quarterback,” Pirtle said. “(Then) our offense just started being more physical, running it up the middle, and it opened things up.”

Then, 29 seconds before halftime, Austin Johnson threw a 26-yard TD pass to Tyler Tucker to give the Colts a 30-8 lead at intermission.

Shawnee scored on the first possession of the second half thanks to a nine-play, 83-yard drive that was kept alive by a 27-yard pass on a fake punt and a pass interference call on the Colts. Allen’s 6-yard touchdown run, which was set up by his 27-yard pass to Griffith, and conversion pass trimmed DeSales’ lead to 30-16.

It was all Colts after that as Pirtle, Ruxer, Johnson, Ryan Smith and Joe Sims all had touchdown runs.

“That team shouldn’t have scored 65 points on us,” Wyatt said. “Hopefully we’ll see them again.”
