Desert Hills trails Park City, Grantsville after Day 1


At least one girls tennis player from Region 9 advanced to the semifinals at the 3A State Championship in Salt Lake City.

However, the current overall standings have Park City and Grantsville at the top in first and second place with Desert Hills coming up in third place.

Highlighted by three Region 9 tennis players in the final four first singles spots, Region 9 made it presence felt on Day 1 of the state championship.

Pine View’s Lacey Hancock, the three-time defending state champion in first singles, advanced flawlessly through the first two rounds Friday. She swept Union’s Ashley Hansen, 6-0, 6-0, and Stansbury’s Sydney Squires, 6-0, 6-0. She will face Park City’s Taylor Matz in the semifinals Saturday.

The second semifinal match in first singles features Desert Hills’ Madz Eames against Snow Canyon’s Francessca Eklund. Eames defeated Uintah’s Casey McClellan, 6-1, 6-3, and Payson’s McKenzie Lybbert, 6-3, 6-0. Eklund defeated Morgan’s Olivia Anderson, 6-2, 6-0, and Grantsville’s Jen Christensen, 6-0, 6-4.

Pine View’s Hannah Erekson is the lone Region 9 representative in the semifinals for second singles. She defeated Dixie’s Riley Stewart, 6-1, 6-0, and Union’s Kayla Spencer 6-3, 6-1. Erekson will face Payson’s Stacie Snow in the semifinals.

Pine View’s Hattie Erekson and Desert Hills’ Olivia Shakespeare both advanced to the semifinals in third singles. Hattie Erekson defeated Bear River’s Sage Nielson, 6-0, 6-2, and Uintah’s Mariah Sam, 6-3, 6-1. Shakespeare defeated Stansbury’s Abbie Stanworth, 6-1, 6-3, and Payson’s Olivia Fordiani, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Hattie Erekson will face Grantsville’s Morgan Matthews, and Shakespeare will face Park City’s Jessica Santos in the semifinals.

Dixie’s dominant duo of Kenedi Cooper and Savannah Topham made their way to the semifinals of first doubles with a win over Morgan’s Samiah Hartman and Ally Sheffer, 6-0, 6-1, and Stansbury’s Kallie Stewart and Alyssa Guymon, 6-0, 6-0. Cooper and Topham will face Park City’s Natalie Beal and Julianna Signor in the semifinals.

On the other side of the bracket, Desert Hills’ Maddie Barton and Alani Plumb defeated Union’s Bailee Johnson and Chelsie Birchell, 6-1, 6-1, and Richfield’s Nicole Hair and Kelsey Moore, 6-1, 6-3. Barton and Plumb will face Grantsville’s Madi Linares and Whitney Castagno.

The other Dixie duo of Kelli Stovall and Rachael Barney defeated Snow Canyon’s Dusti Pereira and Charlotte Apple, 6-1, 6-0, and Bear River’s Rachel Shaw and Lindsay Huber, 6-3, 6-1. Stovall and Barney will face Payson’s Leighann Stowe and Ketelin Orton in the semifinals.
