Dinuba wins Sierra-Sequoia Divisional wrestling tournament


The Dinuba wrestling team continued it’s breakout season with a second consecutive win at a postseason tournament.

One week after clinching their first Central Sequoia League championship, the Emperors took first place at the Sierra-Sequoia Divisional tournament in Dinuba.

Michael Wright won a divisional title at 160 pounds with a first period pin of Kerman’s Hunberto Fernandez.

Isaiah Perez (106), Jacob Wright (113), David Del Bosque (126) and Arshdeep Dhanda (170) rounded out a list of five Emperors who made it to the divisional finals.

David Padilla (220) and Dawuud Davis (285) each placed third in the top two weight classes. Alex Del Bosque (132) finished fourth.

Andy Alvarez was Tulare County’s only other champion at the tournament as he edged David Del Bosque 3-1 in the 126 finals. Michael Alvarez placed third with an 11-2 major decision against Alex Del Bosque. Granite Hills finished 10th as a team.

Exeter finished in seventh as a team, with Dawson Boland (138) and Tyler Coker (160) each placing third. Gabriel Ledesma (126), Tanner Jones (145) and Kyle Jones (152) each finished fourth.

Dinuba’s Jordan Cisneros (132) and Granite Hills’ Saul Samano (145) each finished fifth. Dinuba’s Tony Serna (195) finished sixth.

The top placers from the Sierra-Sequoia Divisional tournament advance to next week’s Central Section Masters at Madera South. From there wrestlers qualify for the state tournament held March 7-8 at Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield.
