District play starts with 3-1A, 1-B

The long-awaited start to boys basketball district play is here — well for two districts.

District 3-1A and District 1-B will tip off league action today as other districts start Tuesday and next Friday.

Logansport (5-7) under first-year boys basketball coach Stephen Stroud has a chance to finish in the top half of 3-1A.

The Tigers have won two of three, beating Stanley and Grant while falling to Pleasant Hill. Logansport heads to LaSalle to open district.

Northwood-Lena (13-5) is the favorite in the league while Block (6-6) and Montgomery (5-6) figure to challenge to Logansport in the district pecking order.

St. Mary’s (1-14) lone win came against Block in non-district action while LaSalle (2-11) has two wins against Harrisonburg.

In District 1-B, Doyline (10-9) will try to recover from losing four of five when they start district play at Weston.

Weston (18-6) has won seven of eight and should figure into the district title discussion of a league that Castor won this past season.

Castor (6-14) had early-season struggles but they’ve won three of five heading into a home game with Dodson.

Dodson (17-8) is on an eight-game winning streak and has already played Weston three times, winning the first meeting and losing the last two.

Byrd-Loyola square off: Byrd is one of the best teams in northwest Louisiana, but the Yellow Jackets will run into one of the hottest teams Friday in Loyola, who is on an eight-game winning streak.

The Flyers (14-5) count Calvary twice, an overtime win against Neville and a win against Mansfield in their winning streak.

Byrd (17-3) won eight in a row before losing its last two — to Orr Academy of Chicago and Natchitoches Central.
