District roundup: Union City charges back to beat Bronson

The Union City boys’ basketball team recovered from a slow start to win its Class C district opener by a score of 61-56 against Bronson on Monday night.

Bronson led 16-5 after the first quarter, but Union City stormed back to take the lead after outscoring the Vikings by a 43-25 margin in the second and third quarters combined.

“We’re a young team so we knew we just had to survive that first quarter and then in the second our defensive intensity took over and carried us the rest of the way,” said Union City coach Ben Chard.

Darren Austin led the way for the Chargers with 20 points, four steals and some key free throws down the stretch.

“Darren Austin showed some leadership for us tonight, especially in the second and third quarters,” Chard said. “He was 6-6 from the line, he handled the ball well for us and made several big defensive plays.”
