Wake Forest was the first.
But the Demon Deacons surely won’t be the last major college football program to offer a scholarship to Reynolds junior Rico Dowdle if he keeps up this level of production.
Dowdle (917 yards, 10 touchdowns) ran for career highs in yardage (251) and touchdowns (four) in last Friday’s 42-13 home win over Roberson.
After sitting out the first four games for disciplinary reasons, Dowdle has averaged 9.4 yards per carry and 152.8 yards a game behind an offensive line that includes starters Rob Hendrick, Tyler McLaughlin, Jake Setterlind, Stephen Sparacino and Colby Wilson.
Dowdle put up 278 combined yards against the only two teams without a MAC loss (Asheville High and Erwin). He also has 11 receptions for 183 yards and four touchdowns.
Dowdle, Tevin Stafford (785 yards and 11 touchdowns with five interceptions) and the rest of the Rockets (5-5, 3-2) have scored 190 points during a three-game winning streak.
Stafford’s only touchdown pass from last Friday (11 yards) went to fellow senior Stone Fentzlaff (22 receptions for 316 yards and five touchdowns).
C.J. Allen (475 rushing yards, 255 receiving yards and seven combined touchdowns), Mason Smith (12 receptions for 80 yards), A.J. Logan (717 yards, 10 touchdowns) and Shaqwan Jones (432 yards, five touchdowns) have also been integral weapons.
