The lights were once again on at Joe Yenni Stadium Thursday for a scrimmage between Jefferson Parish rivals East Jefferson and West Jefferson.

This was not just a final tune-up for both teams, but it was also the first game action for new head coaches Marc Martin of East Jefferson and Kevin Fox of West Jefferson. Both served as assistants for their respective schools in 2013, and Martin, in particular, is trying to fill the shoes of Nick Saltaformaggio, who led the Warriors to last season’s Class 4A state title before leaving for Hahnville.

The scrimmage was composed of two sections: a period of open-field plays, then each team taking snaps in goal-line situations.

West Jefferson scored the only touchdown of open-field play on a long touchdown run by sophomore backup quarterback Jason Thomas. The rest of the open-field period was flooded with penalties that killed drives for both teams and kept the scoring low.

The Buccaneers then took the first snaps of the goal line period—and scored on their first play, when junior quarterback Coley Ransaw connected with his wide receiver from 10 yards out.

But the Warrior defense held West Jeff at bay after that, and East Jeff senior quarterback Tracey Bright was able to score once on the ground and once through the air, leaving the two teams tied with no plays left to run.

“I thought it was a very spirited scrimmage, both sides played well,” Martin said after the scrimmage. “There was some good licks passed out there, the kids were just hungry to hit someone else.”

Fox liked what his coaches did on offense, but he sees lots of work left to do for his Buccaneers.

“Penalties, we had a bunch of them,” Fox said. “We’ve got technique work to do. We’ve got a lot of technique work to do.”

West Jefferson will face Archbishop Shaw in a jamboree game on August 29th at Hoss Memtsas Stadium before kicking the regular season off at Destrehan. The Warriors will open their season on September 5th at Joe Yenni Stadium against Higgins.
