Warren Easton quarterback Deshawn Capers-Smith was named Gatorade Louisiana Football Player of the Year Thursday, making him the first player from the Canal Street school to win the award.

A date with top seed Plaquemine Friday night is all that stands between Easton and the school’s first championship berth since 1958. If they win Friday, then defeat Franklinton or Neville in the Superdome next Saturday, the Eagles will earn their first state title since 1942. And though receivers Tyron Johnson and Clyde Chriss have been outstanding, Easton owes the lion’s share of credit for their success to Capers-Smith.

The senior quarterback has done it all, throwing for over 3,700 yards and 45 touchdowns–with just one interception–and running for 1,106 yards and 19 scores. West Jefferson coach Kevin Fox had high praise for Capers-Smith’s skills.

“Deshawn is a playmaker and a superior athlete, which shows on the field weekly,” said Fox, whose Buccaneers were defeated 59-14 by Easton back in September, in a game that saw Capers-Smith account for seven total touchdowns.

“His combination of speed and agility makes him tough to tackle in the open field and he has a ton of natural ability.”

In addition to maintaining a B average in school, Capers-Smith volunteers with the Warren Easton Recycling Program and has donated his time to the Just Keep Livin’ Foundation, which empowers high school students to live healthy, active lives.

Capers-Smith is the eighth player from a local high school to win the award, which is in its 30th year. St. Augustine running back Leonard Fournette took home the award the last two years. Capers-Smith, who is committed to Texas A&M, possibly to play defense, is the fifth of those eight to play quarterback–and the first since Peyton Manning to not play his college football at LSU.
