The Eaton Rapids sixth grade boys basketball team won the Springport Youth Basketball Tournament March 1.
The ‘Hounds used an aggressive man-to-man defense and a balanced scoring attack to capture their first tournament victory of the season after finishing runner up in their previous two tournaments. The boys opened the six-team pool play with a dominating win over Charlotte 53-27.
The Greyhounds had strong guard play from Brandin Osypczuk (11 points) and Caleb Brown (8 points). Cole Dixon dominated the boards with 8 rebounds.
The boys played equally impressive the second game against Springport and put the game out of reach early with a final score of 44-25. RJ VanVliet (6 points) played a strong perimeter game, while Bobby Brown and Tristan Hollandsworth played solid defense, creating multiple turnovers.
After the two victories in pool play, the ‘Hounds advanced into the championship game. The final game pitted Eaton Rapids against the undefeated team from Marshall.
Eaton Rapids came out fast on offense, led by some great passing from Kyle Jones and strong rebounding from Eric Croley. Hunter Williams applied strong defensive pressure, helping to build a solid first half lead.
The ‘Hounds continued the pressure defense in the final period prevailing with a 34-22 victory and the tournament win.
Bronson Sysum was the tournament’s leading scorer with a three-game total of 51 points. Brandon Osypczuk contributed 23 points, while Caleb Brown added 12 points and multiple assists.
RJ VanVliet tallied 16 points, Kyle Jones 6 points, Eric Croley totaled 4 points, Bobby Brown 4 points and Tristan Hollandsworth 2 points. Cole Dixon led all rebounds with 17.
The boys’ overall 2013-2014 record is 18-4. They will compete in three additional tournaments this month, beginning March 8 at the Spring Arbor Shootout.
