Elmira sophomore Abbey Wheeler and Corning freshman Jessica Lawson are among the top 10 seeds in the girls 3,000-meter run for Saturday’s New York State Indoor Track and Field Championships at Cornell University’s Barton Hall.

Wheeler is seeded sixth with a top time of 10 minutes, 3.52 seconds. New York State Federation cross country champion Lawson is seeded 10th in 10:11.41.

Lawson is also part of Corning’s 3,200 relay team, which is seeded fifth (9:34.41). She’s joined on the relay by Morgan Gallagher, Michelle Crook and Maddie Ustanik.

Elmira’s Amari Hadlock is seeded 14th in the long jump (17 feet, 8 inches).

Top hopefuls among area boys are Corning’s John McCarthy in the 1,600 and Tom Moshier in the 1,000. McCarthy is seeded sixth (4:17.66) and Moshier seventh (2:31.17).

Also for Corning, Sam Chauvin is seeded 12th in the 3,200 (9:30.33).

Moshier, Chauvin and McCarthy will join Jared Moore on the 3,200 relay, which is seeded 10th.

Other Corning girls competing are Franny Sariego in the high jump, Emily Stiker in the 300, Katie Butler in the 1,500, Jackie Vaughan in the 1,500 racewalk, Natalie Rogus in the 3,000, and Gallagher and Ustanik in the 1,000.

Elmira’s other girls are Grace Doherty in the shot put, Natalie Hughes in the 1,500 racewalk, Khiere Ashley in the 1,000 and Cathi Mewes in the 600.

Also in the girls competition are Samantha Goble of Waverly in the 600, Waverly’s Sidney Shafer in the pole vault, and Elmira Notre Dame’s Jenny Smithers in the 55 hurdles.

Relay teams include Waverly’s 1,600 team of Goble, Kate Moore, Danielle Burkhart and Kaylee Uhl; and Notre Dame’s 800 relay of Victoria Schutrum, Smithers, Emma Booth and Deborah Diarra. The Section 4 relay includes Diarra, Notre Dame’s Chase Yoder and Elmira’s Mackenzie Tubbs.

Elmira boys competitors are Jerry McPeak in the 55 dash, Ricky Houghtelling in the 300, and the 800 relay of McPeak, Justin Judson, Cabin Seymour and Houghtelling. Brendan Collins is on the intersectional relay.

Watkins Glen’s Matt Gill is competing in the 1,600 and Corning’s Seth Spicer is in the shot put.
