Evangel doubles tandem wins D-III state tennis title

Evangel brought home a Division III boys doubles championship Friday with Andrew Deutsch and Devon Sikora topping Parkview Baptist’s Collin Anders and Michael Bayles 6-2, 6-3 in the finals in Monroe.

The Evangel pair reached the semifinals heading into Friday’s action, and Deutsch/Sikora dispatched of E.D. White’s Bernard/Sundaram 6-2, 6-2 Friday morning before winning the state title that afternoon.

The Eagles’ tandem won five matches overall, topping St. Charles’ Poulos/Roussel 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round, Episcopal’s LeClere/Couvillion 6-0, 6-2 in the second round and St. Louis’ Vanchiere/Ammons in the quarters.

Evangel coach Andy Lloyd couldn’t be reached for comment on the doubles championship.

Calvary nearly matched Evangel’s feat when AnneMarie Kimball advanced to the Division IV finals before falling to defending state champion Kennon Johnson of Ascension Christian 6-2, 6-4.

Kimball, a senior who was playing in her first-ever state tournament, said she enjoyed the ride the last two days.

“The first couple matches were rough, but I played my best match in the semis (to beat Cedar Creek’s Maggie Manning 6-4, 6-3),” Kimball said. “I’ve lost to Johnson before in other tournaments … and she was hitting better than I was today.

“The (tournament) was nerve racking. I was shaking when I was serving match point in the semifinals because I had never been to the finals before.”

Kimball was home-schooled before attending Calvary as a junior, and she was ineligible to play tennis this past season.

But she has amateur tennis experience outside of the high school circuit, and she will continue playing at Belhaven (Miss.) next season.

Loyola’s Charley Boyd couldn’t add a second D-III singles title to his tennis resume, falling in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-0) to Silvio Cosita-Monoc in the semifinals.

Boyd will continue his tennis career at Wagner in New York.

North DeSoto’s Kody Anderson lost to eventual champion Christopher Anders 6-1, 6-1 in the quarters.

North Webster doubles pair of Ben Burns and Reese McClain fell to the runner-up Anders/Bayles 6-2, 6-4 in the quarters.

In Division III girls singles, North Webster’s Tori Pesses dropped a 6-4, 6-4 decision to St. Louis Kaitlen Burguieres in the quarters.

Evangel’s girls doubles pair of Abigail Turnbow and Micah Green advanced to the quarters before losing to eventual champion Hotard/Rueb 6-1, 6-3.
