The Bellarmine University basketball team received a recruiting commitment Saturday morning from forward Adam Eberhard of Evansville Reitz Memorial High School after his official visit to campus.
The 6-foot-7 Eberhard chose the NCAA Division II Knights over Division I scholarship offers from Northern Kentucky and Massachusetts Lowell as well as D-II offers from hometown Southern Indiana, Indianapolis and Lindenwood.
Eberhard said he was drawn to Bellarmine’s academic offerings and their basketball system, which he believes is rooted in unselfish play and making the extra pass.
He said he meshed with the Knights’ players and coaches, calling it a “crazy good fit.”
“It’s about unselfishness and wanting to win (at Bellarmine),” he said. “There’s not going to be one guy. It’s a team that’s going to get it done.”
Eberhard average 19.8 points, 8.4 rebounds and 4.5 assists last season. Bellarmine coach Scott Davenport tracked his games with the Pocket City AAU club in July.
Eberhard said he felt like a major priority to Davenport and has been advised by those around him to go to a college where the head coach goes out of his way to show he wants you.
“That was huge for me,” Eberhard said. “He always talked about being the No. 1 guy for him.”
Eberhard said he’s excited about playing for a high-level D-II school even though he had the chance to play Divison I.
“I want to win, and that’s what it comes down to,” he said. “A lot of small D-1 schools, Bellarmine and other good D-IIs could beat them. I get a chance to win a national championship now, and that’s all it comes down to.”
He is Bellarmine’s second pledge in the 2015 class, along with Trinity guard Daniel Ramser.
