Kurt Keener is on the move again.
A year after resigning as coach and athletic director at Birmingham Detroit Country Day High School to take a basketball head coaching job at Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, Ariz., the longtime coach resigned his position to take a job at Gilbert Christian High School in Gilbert, Ariz.
It’s a small private school on par with Country Day, according to Desert Mountain Athletic Director Kris Alexander.
“Coach Keener resigned in March to pursue other opportunities,” said Alexander. “At Gilbert Christian there are some administrative duties involved with his job.”
He compiled a 15-12 record in his only season at Desert Mountain.
Keener takes over for interim coach Phil Lowe at Gilbert Christian.
In 35 years at Country Day, Keener amassed a record of 678-180 that included nine state titles and two Naismith Prep Players of the Year in Chris Webber and Shane Battier, who recently retired from the NBA.
Keener took over Country Day when it was a Class D school and created a Class B power with some of the best talent in the state.
