Peter Young and his boat Faster, Pussycat! are in first place after the first day of the Force 5 North American Championships.
The regatta, hosted by the Port Huron Yacht Club, had two races on Thursday, and Young placed in the top three in each of them, holding a one-point lead on Frank Lyons (Black Pearl) and Martin Schilke (N/A).
The competition continues today and Saturday in lower Lake Huron, just north of Lakeside Beach in Port Huron. Racing will start at 10:30 a.m. on both days.
Young sails out of Washington, D.C., and won the first of Thursday’s two races, taking third in the second.
Gross Ile’s Lyons won the second race after taking fourth in the first, while Bloomington, Indiana’s Schilke placed third in the first race and second in the second.
Fred Meno of Fort Worth, Texas (Moby Dick) and Stephen Kowal of New Baltimore (fluid power) are tied for fourth with 12 points. Meno opened strong, finishing second in the first race, but was 10th in the second race.
Phil Porte, the race chairman, was the top local racer on the day. The St. Clair resident sits in ninth place with his boat Jobu. He placed 12th in the first race, and ninth in the second.
There are 29 boats entered in the regatta.
