Elwood Pennington, a former Halls and Webb School of Knoxville assistant football coach and father of former NFL quarterback Chad Pennington, has died.
Pennington, also known as “Coach P”, taught middle school physical education at the private school almost 10 years, retiring from teaching in 2003. In addition to helping coach football for the Webb Spartans team, Pennington also taught middle and upper school girls’ basketball.
He also had been an assistant coach at Halls High School.
Webb announced Pennington’s death Monday on its website. He had suffered heart problems in recent years.
“Coach was loved by all who knew him,” a Webb statement reads. “He touched so many lives and will truly be missed.”
Survivors include wife Denise.
Chad Pennington played prep football at Webb in the mid 1990s, earning All Knoxville honors.
He went on to a stellar college career at Marshall University in West Virginia, and was fifth in voting in 1999 for the Heisman Trophy.
His 11-year NFL career included stints with the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins.
