The Tigers will play at Eighth Region champ South Oldham
Fern Creek continued its perfect season Saturday night with a 5-0 triumph over DeSales in the boys’ Sixth Region final at Mercy. It was also Fern Creek’s third straight region championship.
Fern Creek advances to the State Tournament, where the Tigers will play at Eighth Region champ South Oldham (13-6-3) at 7 p.m. Tuesday night.
The 19th-ranked Tigers received two goals from senior Secou Drame and one apiece from Ali Abdirahman and Mohamed Abdikadir as well as an own-goal from the Colts (14-6-1) as they easily won the rematch of last year’s region final.
“We were firing on all cylinders,” senior defender Robert Wright said.
After DeSales defender Willie Schurfranz inadvertently headed the ball into his own goal in the 25th minute Fern Creek used its speed to open up the floodgates.
“We like to spread teams out, but unfortunately against that kind of speed we were playing against tonight we weren’t able to do that,” DeSales coach Aaron Gottbrath said. “They are fast, they are disciplined and they don’t make many mistakes, and when they did tonight we couldn’t capitalize.”
Abdirahman scored four minutes after the Colts’ own goal, then Drame tallied three minutes after that to give Fern Creek a 3-0 halftime lead.
Five minutes into the second half Drame headed home the most spectacular goal of the night.
“We did a great job finishing,” said Fern Creek coach John Pedro, whose team has outscored its opponents 85-11 this season.
