THE WINNER: Kaylin Whitney

THE BASICS

School: East Ridge (Clermont, Fla.)
Grade: Sophomore
Event: Sprints
Height: 5-foot-8

Athletic achievement: She won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.48 seconds and the 200-meter dash in 23.69 seconds at the Class 4A state championship meet this spring. Whitney also won the adidas Dream 100 with a time of 11.27 seconds, which ranked as the nation’s No. 2 performance among prep competitors in 2014 at the time of her selection.

Academic excellence: Whitney has maintained a 3.62 GPA.

Exemplary character: She has volunteered locally on behalf of youth track programs, and has visited patients in the pediatric ward at Florida Hospital.

THE PRAISE

“Kaylin has displayed great dedication, commitment and leadership,” said East Ridge head coach Angela House. “What she brings to our school, as well as our track program, is remarkable.”

THE FUTURE: Whitney will be a junior this fall.
