Floyd Central will have the top seeds in seven events as it chases its seventh consecutive sectional championship during Saturday’s IHSAA girls swimming sectional at Highlands Middle School.

The Highlanders will be paced by two-event favorite Meg Taylor and two relays. Taylor is the top seed in the 200-yard freestyle (1:57.05) and the 100 free (53.21), and Floyd has recorded the season’s fastest times in the 200 free relay (1:41.51) and the 400 free relay (3:41.58).

Floyd’s other top seeds are Amy McCormick (5:16.77 in the 500 free), Layah Jones (1:03.63 in the 100 backstroke) and Maryn Meldrum (1:09.17 in the 100 breaststroke).

New Albany’s Stephanie Thom is favored in the 200 individual medley (2:15.21) and the 100 butterfly (59.22), while teammate Alexis Lete is the top seed in the 50 free (25.48).

Jeffersonville is favored in the 200 medley relay (1:57.50).

The winner is each event will qualify for the IHSAA state finals at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis on Feb. 14-15.

Diving prelims will begin at 9 a.m. The top four divers will advance to the regional at Bloomington North on Feb. 11.

Finals in all events will begin at 1 p.m.


Jeffersonville will host the IHSAA regional, featuring qualifiers from the sectionals at Jeffersonville and Jennings County, on Saturday. The top four in each weight class will advance to the semistate in Evansville on Feb. 15.

Boys basketball

Clarksville’s Calvin McEwen was named the District 3 Player of the Week (Jan. 27-Feb. 1) by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.

McEwen averaged 32 points in two wins last week for the Class 2-A No. 2 Generals. He scored 42 points as Clarksville conquered Corydon 79-76 in overtime, then added 22 points and seven assists in just two quarters as Clarksville blasted Southwestern (Hanover) 103-37.

Clarksville’s Andrew Jones will be a candidate for that award this week following his 45-point outburst (with a school-record 10 3-pointers) against Scottsburg on Monday night.

Girls basketball

The IHSAA state tournament will begin on Tuesday with area sectional action at Jennings County (4-A), Charlestown (3-A), Eastern Pekin (2-A), Orleans (Class A) and New Washington (Class A). Sectional semifinals are scheduled for Feb. 14, with finals set Feb. 15.

Two-game regionals will be hosted by Columbus North (4-A), Jasper (3-A), Paoli (2-A) and West Washington (Class A) on Feb. 22.
