What was set to become an exciting fall for the Chapman family in Mount Pleasant hit a bump in the road recently as Mark Chapman suffered an injury in Central Michigan University’s preseason football camp.
Chapman, a 2013 Port Huron graduate and redshirt freshman for the Chippewas, suffered a broken collarbone on Aug. 5, according to the Mount Pleasant Morning Sun, which likely will force him to miss the first few games of the season.
Chapman, a 6-foot, 185-pound receiver, was impressing the CMU coaching staff, and figured to play a big role in the Chippewas offense this fall, likely as a slot receiver, according to the newspaper. CMU begins its season Aug. 28 at home against Chattanooga.
“Mark Chapman is injured right now, and he’s going to miss several weeks,” CMU coach Dan Enos said at the school’s media day. “He was doing great and has a very bright future.”
Mark’s brother, Jarret, is a senior and one of 10 returning starters for the CMU defense, and one of four returning starters in the defensive backfield.
Winslow Chapman and Anthony Scarcelli each are entering their third seasons with the Chippewas, but are sophomores eligibility-wise, as they redshirted in 2012. Winslow Chapman, a defensive back, saw action in nine games a year ago, while Scarcelli, a receiver, saw action two years ago.
Another Port Huron graduate, Alex Zmolik, figures to be the starting tight end at the University of Toledo this fall, as he is listed as the No. 1 player at the position on the Rockets’ depth chart.
Last year, Zmolik started seven games and played in 12, catching six passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. In two years at Toledo, Zmolik has nine catches for 95 yards and three touchdowns. Toledo opens its season Aug. 30 at home against New Hampshire.
Dominic Schultz is entering his fourth year at the University of Minnesota, and is a junior in terms of eligibility. The preferred walk-on linebacker saw action in all 12 of Minnesota’s games a year ago. A depth chart for the Gophers has not been released. Minnesota opens its season Aug. 28 at home against Eastern Illinois.
