Matt Fine is back in the coaching world. Winchester hired Fine, a graduate of the school, to coach its boys basketball team.
Fine was approved at a Tuesday school board meeting.
He comes to the Golden Falcons after a 10-season stint as head coach at Central. Fine had a 158-80 record with the Bearcats, winning six sectional titles and posting two state runner-up finishes.
“There were a couple of things that immediately jumped out at you,” Winchester athletics director Mike Jones said of Fine. “No. 1 is his success. He had won 27 games in the tournament alone. Taking two teams to the state finals. Tremendous success at a big program where the expectations are obviously very high. And we just feel really, really lucky to be able to attract a candidate of his quality.”
His coaching job was re-opened at Central due to the school’s upcoming consolidation with Southside. He initially applied, then withdrew from that search. Jeff Holloway was announced as the Bearcats’ new coach on April 22.
