When it seems a game is going to be shortened by rain, rallies during the middle innings often make a difference. A four-run fourth propelled Holmdel into the lead and three more runs were added in the fifth, as the Hornets (2-0, 2-0) scored a 10-3 victory over Class A Central foe Shore.

Ashley Wong led off the fourth with a single to left and went to third on a bunt single off the bat of Aishawarya Kalyanaraman to put runners at the corners. Kalyanaraman then stole second before a throwing error on a ball hit by Kristen Buscema allowed Wong to score. A passed ball allowed Kalyanaraman to score and a single by Nicole Ponisi brought in Buscema to make it 7-3.

Wong scattered seven hits, struck out four and walked none to earn the victory in the circle, while teammate Kelly Guerin whacked a double and triple and drove in a pair of runs. Michaela Curtis was 3-for-3 with a double for the Blue Devils.

MANALAPAN 4, FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP 2: Cara Settanni went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, and Olivia Carbone was 2-for-3 with a double and triple, as the Braves (2-1, 1-1) grabbed the A North win. The eventual game-winning runs came in during the bottom of the fourth when Rachel Hrevnak doubled in Settanni and Carbone. The Patriots scored twice in the top of the seventh but couldn’t prevent Kristen Ruggiero, who allowed five hits and fanned five, from earning the victory.

MANCHESTER 8, JACKSON LIBERTY 5: A three-run fifth was the difference as the Hawks (2-2, 2-2) registered the B South win. After Katie Rodriguez walked with one out, a pair of grounders advanced her to third, before a pair of errors scored Rodriguez and allowed two more runs to cross the plate to make it 8-1. Megan Wettengel was 2-for-3 with a double for Manchester. For the Lions, Laura Telfer went 3-for-3 with a double.

BRICK MEMORIAL 9, BRICK 5: Kristen Hanlon, who went 3-for-5, singled in a pair of runs during a five-run fourth, and pitcher Jess Bormann scattered nine hits and whiffed seven, as the Mustangs (1-1, 1-1) captured the A South victory. Kristi Kawa went 3-for-4 with a home run for the Green Dragons, while teammates Nicole DiFoglio, who also slugged a homer, Nikkie Forbes and Kelly Smiley each had two hits.

OCEAN 13, MATAWAN 3: Veronica Woehr and Giovanna Russomanno each went 2-for-4 with a double while Morgan Walsh went 2-for-2 with a double and two walks, and Michaela Pembleton allowed three hits, struck out five and walked one for the victory, as the Spartans (2-0, 2-0) won the B North clash. Ocean’s Kelli Shapiro also had two hits, as did the Huskies’ Erin Powers.

KEANSBURG 15, KEYPORT 5: Angela Osterbye doubled in the tying and go-ahead runs, then stole third and scored on a wild pitch during a four-run second inning, as the Titans (2-1, 2-1) grabbed the B Central win in six innings. Osterbye ended up 3-for-4 with 5 RBI, while pitcher Bobbie Burdick gave up three hits and fanned nine. Taylor Sheridan gave the Red Raiders a temporary lead in the top of the second when she belted a two-run homer.
