FVA girls' basketball: Appleton North, Neenah earn wins

Appleton North girls’ basketball coach Joe Russom wasn’t completely thrilled with his team’s defense on Friday, but he liked the offense.

The Lightning had three players score in double figures and that balance led North to a 49-39 victory over Appleton East in a Fox Valley Association game at East.

Mackenzie Greisch led North with 15 points. Matayla Springstroh and Claire Van Handel each scored 12.

“The kids really stepped up,” Russom said. “I think they really shared the ball well and offensively it was one of our better games.”

North led almost the entire game but the Patriots were able to pull within 31-28 after three quarters.

“Defensively, there are some things we need to work on there,” Russom said.

Sara Hagmann led Appleton East with 11 points.

At Neenah, the Rockets jumped out to a 17-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to the win over the Bluejays in the final FVA meeting between the schools.

“It’s a sad night, because it’s the last time we’ll see Menasha as part of the FVA,” Rockets coach Andy Braunel said. “It would be nice to keep that going if we can.”

Kauri Jensen had 12 points and Rylee Engelland scored 11 for the Rockets. Menasha’s Katelyn Sewall led all scorers with 14 points.

At Appleton, Sydney Cocking scored 10 points but the Terrors were cold in the second quarter and it proved to be the difference.

“The second quarter was the killer,” Appleton West coach Richard Ruhsam said. “We couldn’t get to the foul line and we couldn’t buy a shot. We got open looks. They are tall. I don’t know if their size bothered us, but we couldn’t make anything.”
