Brandon Bates (132 pounds) and Jay Nino (220) each won nine matches without a loss as Genoa’s wrestling team finished Division III Duals at Sandusky St. Mary Central Catholic in fourth place Saturday.

Dayton Christian didn’t lose a match as a team while the Comets were 7-2. Eighteen teams competed.

Heavyweights Cody Buckner and Louis Cutchall combined to win nine matches for Genoa. Bates is 43-5, Nino 51-1, Buckner 31-1 and Cutchall 19-1.

The four were first-team all-tournament at SMCC.

The Comets beat Mapleton, Huron, Reading, Mohawk, Montpeiler, Brookville and Hopewell-Loudon. Genoa lost to projected Division III state champion Dayton Christian and Massillon Tuslaw, which finished second in the state last year.

The Comets had 41 pins and were 70-47 individually.

Tyler Rozek (170) and Damian D’Emilio (113) were 7-2 while Matt Herrick (195) was 6-3. Rozek is 23-9, D’Emilio 47-5 and Herrick 16-6.

Nino and Rozek had six pins each while D’Emilio and Bates had five.

Adam Bates (126), Dustin Widmer (120) and Thor Morrison (106) won five matches apiece. Buckner had four wins and three pins while Tyler Baird (182) was 4-0 with four pins.

Genoa started the season 7-8 in duals. It is 32-5 since.

The 39 team dual wins are third all-time for a single season in the state.
