Brandon Gildea led the Southern boys tennis team past Mater Dei Prep 5-0 in a Shore Conference Tournament first-round match Thursday.
Competing at first singles, Gildea topped Larry Tetman 6-0, 6-0 for the ninth-seeded Rams (9-1). The 24th-seeded Seraphs fell to 2-3.
The Rams also won at second and third singles where Max Oehlmann and Shjon Houser posted wins. Oehlmann prevaiied 6-0, 6-1 over Justin Hintz at No. 2. Houser bested Joe Maher 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3.
The Rams’ Jason LaVoie and Rich Zennario won at first doubles. Mark Sullivan and Andrew Davis were winners at second doubles.
IN OTHER FIRST-ROUND ACTION:
PINELANDS 3, LONG BRANCH 2: The 13th-seeded Wildcats (8-1) won at third singles and at first and second doubles, ousting the No. 20 Green Wave (4-4).
Dan MacPhee won in straight sets. Pinelands’ Matt Schnelker and Thomas Poklikuha won in straight sets at first doubles. Lucas Bichler and Josh Humphreys lost just one game in the second set at No. 2 doubles.
TR NORTH 5, RED BANK 0: The No. 14 Mariners eliminated the No. 19 Bucs, winning four matches in straight sets.
Jordan Mallen keyed the win, prevailing 6-3, 6-2 over James Latimer at first singles. Jeff Lewis (No. 2) and Troy Fitzsimmons (No. 3) added singles victories.
FREEHOLD TWP. 5, RANNEY SCHOOL 0: The No. 10 Patriots (5-3) ousted the No. 23 Panthers (6-2).
Blake Goldberg, competing at first singles, led the winners, coming out on top 6-0, 6-1 over Josh Weakley at first singles. Darren Schneider and Matt Turley added wins at second and third singles, respectively.
SHORE REG. 4, CENTRAL 1: Posting wins at first and second singles and first and second doubles, the No. 18 Blue Devils (4-3) ousted the No. 15 Golden Eagles (6-2).
Matt Resnikoff won in straight sets at first singles. Robert Greenburg came out on top at second singles. Austin Carkhuft and Evan Coffey were winners at first doubles. Chris Primavera and Avery Walsh triumphed at second doubles.
IN GIRLS LACROSSE
SHORE 15, MANASQUAN 4: Sarah George netted a team-high four goals as the Blue Devils avenged their overtime loss to the Warriors early this season, and picking up a big Shore Conference Class A Central win. Maddy Norman also finished with three goals and an assist for the Blue Devils.
Emily Resier and Lauren Britton each added two more for the Blue Devils. Shae Cowley finished with a team-high two goals for the Warriors.
COLTS NECK 16, HOWELL 14: Erika Keselman finished with a game-high eight goals leading the Cougars over the Rebels in a Class A North game. Olivia Lafata also had a goal along with three assists for the Cougars. Kelly Ackermann finished with seven saves in net for the Cougars.
Emma Sinott finished with a team-high four goals along with two assists for the Rebels.
IN BOYS VOLLEYBALL:
TR NORTH 2, TR SOUTH 1: Nico Mercadante’s 13 kills and six aces and Dan Dellane’s 24 assists led the visiting Mariners (8-5, 6-2) past the Indians (2-7, 2-5) in Class A South.
Zach Lynne hustled to 23 digs for the Mariners. Eric Ryan added 11 kills. Ryan Casey led the Indians with 24 assists and two blocks. Chris Kluxen contributed seven kills and five digs. Francis Hearne and R.J. Laing added 11 kills and five kills, respectively.
RB CATHOLIC 2, MANCHESTER 1: J.P. Legrottaglie notched 12 kills and added seven digs and two aces for the visiting Caseys (7-4) in their Class A Central conquest of the Hawks (1-6).
Thomas Clagett contributed 2 kills and five digs. Tyler Connolly added 24 assists, seven digs and three blocks. Albert Isenhour added 3 kills, 3 blocks and 3 digs. Pat Meehan contributed nine digs. Mac Taylor aided the win with 20 kills and five digs.
Blake Borsetti put nine kills, four blocks, nine digs and four assists into the book for the Hawks.
HOWELL 2, FREEHOLD 0: Led by James Donahue’s eight kills, two blocks, five digs and three aces, the visiting Rebels (9-2, 6-2) bested the Colonials (4-9, 1-6) in Class A North.
Jake Brown added 12 kills and two blocks. Jason Gillies contributed 21 assists and three aces. Joe McMerty led the Colonials with 13 assists. Riley Shea added six kills and six digs.
WALL 2, LONG BRANCH 0: Mike Smith’s 13 assists and two digs and Brady Donahue’s seven kills and four digs propelled the visiting Crimson Knights (10-1, 7-0) past the Green Wave in Class A Central.
