Ashley Pionkowski had 16 points and Brooke Groholski added 10 points as the Amherst girls basketball team rolled to a 55-20 win over Shiocton Friday.
With the win, the Falcons improved to 9-1 in the Central Wisconsin Conference-8 , and are a half-game out of first place going into a pivotal week.
The Falcons face road games at third-place Bonduel Monday, and at conference-leading Wittenberg-Birnamwood on Friday.
“Obviously it’s going to be huge week for us. Both of those teams are right there with us,” Amherst coach Jay Pitt said. “When we lost to Witt-Birn we knew we still controlled what happend (in the conference race. Now we’re at the point where we can do something about it.
The Falcons limited Shiocton to six points in the first half and led by 23 points at the break.
“We put some pressure on them and forced a lot of turnovers early,” Pitt said. “When we didn’t turn it over we forced them in to some quicker shots that we rebounded as well.”
The Falcons had a balanced offensive attack as Shiocton focused on shutting down guard Jaimee Pitt, who finished with seven points.
“We hit a little rough patch a few weeks ago, and went back to the basics in practice,” Coach Pitt said.
“We broke things down offensively, and we played played much better over the last five or six games. We moved the ball around nicely (tonight), and it’s a nice building block going into next week.”
