Girls basketball: Chontel Fils boosts Albertus Magnus

Rebounding was a major weakness for Albertus Magnus a year ago and cost the Falcons close games.

But the bothersome woe no longer hinders the Falcons. Chontel Fils’ play on the boards has answered coach Pat Buckley’s wishes thus far, and that trend continued with her dominating effort in Sunday’s 85-61 win at Pearl River.

Fils finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

“Now with the emergence of Chontel Fils, everything is opening up for us on the offense,” Buckley said. “She’s really coming around for us these last five or six games.

“She’s providing a nice presence in the paint.”

Last season, Fils was sidelined for the season due to transferring rules when she came from Spring Valley as a freshman. Without a talented player like Fils to control the paint, the Falcons struggled to limit opposing offenses to one shot attempt each possession.

Fils’ knack for grabbing the ball off the backboard has flourished in the past four games versus Section 1 opponents. Buckley noted her ability for offensive putbacks has been “amazing.”

Over that span, Fils has helped Albertus Magnus (11-4) average more than 76 points a game.

Kelly Guarino added 26 points and four assists to Sunday’s rout.

“She’s really positioning herself well,” Buckley said of Fils. “She’s been getting better every practice and every game, and it’s starting to show.”

Emily Daly had 16 points for Pearl River.
