Dobbs Ferry defeated visiting Irvington 69-62 on Tuesday to snap the Bulldogs’ nearly five-year winning streak against Section 1 Class B opponents.
Alyssa Chipello had 36 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as she helped the Eagles hand Irvington its first defeat against a Section 1 Class B team since a loss to Nanuet in the 2009 section final.
“(Chipello) basically had a refuse-to-lose attitude,” Dobbs Ferry coach Erik Bartell said.
He credited seniors Chipello, Chrissy Whitty (10 points), Kana Kihara and Jamie Coradina with motivating the team early on. “They just came out with a fire,” he said. “They put the rest of the team in that mindset.”
The teams entered the fourth tied 44-44, but Chipello broke things open by scoring 15 points in the quarter as Dobbs Ferry outscored the Bulldogs 25-18.
Molly Altholz had 17 points, 12 rebounds and seven blocks in the win. Laurilyn Gelardi led Irvington with 23 points.
“We beat probably one of the best programs in Section 1 over the past 20 years,” Bartell said. “I feel very blessed to have been a part of it.”
