STAUNTON – Stuart Hall needed overtime Friday night before the Dragons took down the Roanoke Catholic Celtics 48-41 in girls’ basketball.
The Dragons jumped ahead early, building a 14-2 lead to start the game. Roanoke Catholic settled down to close out the first quarter on a 7-2 run that cut the deficit to 16-9.
The two teams continued to trade baskets in the second quarter, but Roanoke Catholic was able to close the gap as Stuart Hall went into halftime with a 22-19 advantage.
The third quarter was just as tightly contested as Stuart Hall held a 30-29 lead going to the final eight minutes.
Roanoke Catholic was able to take the lead in the fourth period, but Stuart Hall regained the upper hand late. Roanoke Catholic’s Gabby McClelland scored with 1.9 seconds remaining to tie the game at 41 and sent it to overtime.
In overtime, Stuart Hall’s defense took over, not allowing a basket. Sydney Nuckoles went 5 of 6 from the free-throw line to seal the victory.
Stuart Hall was led in scoring by Nuckoles with 16 points and Charlotte Hereford with 13. Ari Williams pulled down 12 rebounds.
Stuart Hall (9-0) is idle until Jan. 8 when it travels to Eastern Mennonite.
In a middle school girls’ game Friday, Stuart Hall went on the road and beat Mount Carmel Christian 27-15.
Stuart Hall’s Lexie Lee scored 20 to lead the Dragons.
The Dragons return to action Jan. 7 at home against James River Day.
